Every now and then life throws you a curve ball \u2014 or in my cricketing days, a ball that pitched on a rough patch and turned at right angles! Sometimes you miss it completely, sometimes it bowls you, and sometimes you edge it for four runs. What seemed like misfortune suddenly turns into a bit of luck.<\/p>\n

That, in essence, is serendipity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The word itself has a curious history. It was coined in the 18th century by Horace Walpole, who drew on a Persian fairy tale called The Three Princes of Serendip<\/em>. In the story, the princes were always making unexpected discoveries through accidents and sharp observations. \u201cSerendip\u201d was the old name for Sri Lanka, and so \u201cserendipity\u201d came to mean a happy accident \u2014 finding something valuable you weren\u2019t really looking for.<\/p>\n
