The Proof of the Pudding

The Proof of the Pudding

It’s a phrase we’ve all heard countless times: “The proof of the pudding is in the eating.” But how often do we stop to think about what it actually means? Or where it came from?

I first heard it from my father, usually after I’d been boasting about how good my cricket batting would be “next time.” His response was always the same: “Well, the proof of the pudding is in the eating.” In other words, stop talking and start delivering. He was right, of course—runs on the board always spoke louder than promises in the pavilion.

Where the Phrase Comes From

The expression goes back to at least the 14th century. In its original form it was often simply: “the proof of the pudding.” In those days, “proof” meant “test” rather than “evidence,” and puddings were not the sweet desserts we think of today, but savoury mixtures often stuffed into animal intestines or stomachs.

So the phrase quite literally meant: “the test of whether this pudding is any good is to try it.” You could prod it, sniff it, or admire its appearance, but you wouldn’t know if it was wholesome (or even safe!) until you actually tasted it.

By the 17th century, the phrase had spread widely in English, and Samuel Pepys even noted it in his famous diary. Over time, the wording evolved into the form we use today: “The proof of the pudding is in the eating.”

What It Really Means

In modern terms, the phrase is all about results over promises. It’s easy to claim something is excellent—a product, a plan, even a pudding. But until it’s tested in practice, you don’t really know.

  • A footballer can talk about their skill, but until the match kicks off, no one’s convinced.

  • A marketing strategy can sound clever on paper, but until it brings in leads and sales, it’s just theory.

  • And in my own dental career, you could learn the textbooks cover to cover, but until you sat down with a patient in the chair, your ability wasn’t proven.

The lesson is timeless: you find out whether something works by putting it to use.

How It Applies to Us

The phrase is particularly relevant in affiliate marketing. When I began, I fell into the trap of admiring “shiny” courses and platforms from the outside. They looked impressive, promised results, and were wrapped in glossy marketing. But many turned out to be empty calories—like a pudding that looked grand but tasted dreadful.

What makes the difference is trying, testing, and experiencing for yourself. That’s why I believe so strongly in practical systems that can be put to work quickly.

Back to the Cricket Pitch

To return to my old cricketing days, I once had a teammate who loved to talk a big game. At practice he’d explain all the shots he could play and how many centuries he would score. But when Saturday came, the “proof” was usually a thin outside edge and a quick return to the pavilion.

Meanwhile, the quieter lads, who let the bat do the talking, ended up carrying the innings. The proof of the pudding really was in the eating.

Final Word

Next time someone uses the phrase, remember its humble origins in medieval kitchens and think about its modern truth. Whether on the sports field, in the surgery, or online, promises mean little without proof.

So don’t just admire the pudding. Taste it. Don’t just read about affiliate marketing. Try a system designed to work.
